Parents sometimes ask why our Moorebank centre invests so much in a mud kitchen, garden beds, balance logs and a climbing frame instead of desks and worksheets. The short answer: because the research is on the mud’s side.

Worksheets teach compliance; mud teaches thinking

A worksheet has one right answer. A mud kitchen has none — which is exactly why it works. Children experiment with quantities, textures and cause and effect, form hypotheses (‘more water makes it runnier’) and test them immediately. That is the scientific method, age three.

Strong bodies build strong writers

Handwriting starts in the shoulders. Climbing, digging, hanging, carrying watering cans — this is what develops the core, shoulder and hand strength a child needs before pencil control is even possible. Fine motor skills are built on gross motor foundations, not before them.

Risk you can reach

Balance logs and climbing frames offer what researchers call manageable risk: challenges children choose at their own edge. Meeting them builds judgement, confidence and resilience — the qualities that later look like a child who has a go at hard things.

Gardens grow eaters and scientists

Garden beds teach patience, life cycles, counting and care. They also solve dinner-table battles: children who grow a vegetable will usually eat that vegetable. Our garden-to-plate sessions with the kitchen turn the harvest into morning tea.

Where the academics fit

None of this replaces early literacy and numeracy — it feeds them. Recipes in the mud kitchen become mark-making; seed packets become reading; harvest counts become maths. By the time formal learning arrives, it lands on a child who is strong, curious and used to persisting.
