Handing your baby to someone else for the first time is hard. It is supposed to be. Here is a realistic, week-by-week picture of how settling in usually goes — including the parts nobody warns you about.

Before day one: orientation visits

Start with two or three short visits where you stay. Your baby plays, you chat with their primary educator about routines — sleep cues, bottles, comfort items — and the room stops being a strange place. At our Moorebank centre, families can visit as often as they like before starting.

Week one: short days, big feelings

Keep the first days short if you can — a few hours between sleeps. Expect tears at drop-off, and expect them to stop quickly once you leave; educators will message you photos so you are not imagining the worst at your desk. Say a clear, quick goodbye every time. Sneaking out feels kinder but teaches babies that you might vanish at any moment.

Week two: routines take hold

Your baby starts sleeping and feeding closer to their home routine, because the nursery follows yours rather than imposing its own. Drop-offs may still wobble. That is normal — consistency matters more than a tear-free morning.

Weeks three and four: connection

Most babies now greet their primary educator with recognition, settle faster and start joining sensory play. Some have a regression around now — also normal, especially after a weekend or illness. Hold the routine steady.

What helps most

A consistent drop-off ritual. The same comfort item every day. Honest two-way communication with the room — tell them about bad nights and new teeth, and read the daily updates in the app. And be kind to yourself: settling in is a transition for parents too.
