The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is the Australian Government payment that reduces what families pay for approved childcare. It confuses almost everyone at first, so here is the plain-English version.

Who is eligible

Broadly: you care for a child aged 13 or under who attends an approved service, you are responsible for the fees, and you meet residency requirements. Almost all working, studying and job-seeking families qualify for some level of subsidy.

How much you get

Your subsidy percentage is based on your combined family income — lower incomes receive a higher percentage, tapering as income rises. Families with more than one child aged five or under in care usually receive a higher rate for the younger children. Income thresholds change each financial year, so check Services Australia for the current figures rather than trusting a blog post — including this one.

The activity test

The number of subsidised hours per fortnight depends on how much recognised activity — work, study, volunteering, job hunting — you and your partner do. More activity means more subsidised hours. There is also a base entitlement for lower-income families, so do not assume you are not eligible without checking.

How to apply

Apply through your Centrelink account in myGov before or as your child starts care: make a claim, provide your income estimate and activity details, then confirm your child’s enrolment when the centre submits it. Do this early — the subsidy cannot be backdated far.

How it appears on your statement

The subsidy is paid directly to the centre and shows on your statement as a reduction, so you only pay the gap fee. A small percentage is withheld by the government during the year and squared up at tax time, which protects you from a surprise debt.
