10 Fun Learning Activities to Try at Home with Your Toddler

These are the activities our educators reach for most in the Toddler room, adapted for home. Each one takes minutes to set up, uses things you already own, and builds something real: language, fine motor control, early maths or emotional skills.

1. Water pouring station

A tray, two cups and a small jug of water. Pouring builds hand control and teaches more and less, full and empty. Add a sponge and it becomes a science lesson.

2. Sensory tub

Fill a tub with dry rice, pasta or oats and hide small toys inside. Scooping and digging strengthens the hands that will later hold a pencil.

3. Sorting the washing

Socks by colour, clothes by person, big and small. Sorting is the beginning of maths, and toddlers love a job that looks like yours.

4. Kitchen band

Pots, wooden spoons and a saucepan lid. Rhythm and beat support language development, and it is a good outlet for a wriggly afternoon.

5. Cardboard box world

One big box becomes a car, a cave or a shop. Pretend play is where toddlers rehearse language and feelings.

6. Picture hunt

Hide a few pictures or objects around the room and hunt for them together. Following clues builds memory, vocabulary and attention.

7. Mud kitchen

Old pots, a bucket of water and a patch of dirt. Our outdoor mud kitchen is one of the busiest spots at the centre for good reason: measuring, mixing and negotiating over the best spoon.

8. Sticky wall

Tape contact paper to a wall, sticky side out, and offer leaves, fabric scraps and paper. Standing to work builds shoulder strength and lets toddlers make big art without a brush.

9. Cooking together

Stirring, tipping and tasting. Toddlers can help with almost every step of muffins or a fruit salad, and children who cook are more willing to eat.

10. Story with a twist

Read a favourite book, then act it out with toys or change the ending together. Retelling stories is one of the strongest predictors of later reading.

You do not need special equipment. Most of the best toddler learning happens with water, boxes and a bit of mess.
